This is the 'fresh' great white shark that my girlfriend and I were lucky enough to assist in and photograph during the dissection at the California State University of Long Beach Shark Lab. It was about 9 feet long and was ACCIDENTALLY caught by its tail in a commercial fishing net about a mile off of the coast of Ventura, California. It was already dead when it was brought to the surface and was rushed to the shark lab for scientific analysis.

I only capture the photographs and have love for all animals ;)
It was unintentionally caught (by-catch) in a net that had been set out by commercial fishermen for large market value fish. They agree to notify local University Scientists when sharks and such are caught. They will handle it well while trying to keep it alive until scientists arrive to analyze & document it. Unfortunately, this one was not alive when brought to the boat in the net by the fishermen... but it could still be studied and analyzed. It is sad but there are real scientists out there trying to understand them better and hopefully prevent something like this from happening someday in the future.

They are called electro-receptors.
They detect elctrical signals like heart beats from prey that is too far to see or under neath them. They are nerve stems that come from the brain and sense around the mouth and snout.

sad that it had drowned because of human nets.
But honestly, when ask to dissect it, I wound not know where to start, because it`s a so huge fish it takes a while to get through; but on the other hand, all things to be found are bigger. - Hopefully it`s death had some sense at last.
